What is the difference between 22K, 21K, and 18K gold?

Fineness

Karat does not describe gold weight. It describes purity—the proportion of gold in an alloy. Jewellery of the same weight can therefore differ in gold content, price, colour, and practical characteristics depending on whether it is 22K, 21K, or 18K.

How karat represents purity

The karat purity scale treats 24 parts as the whole. Twenty-four karat means nearly pure gold. When copper, silver, or other metals are alloyed with gold to make jewellery more usable, the karat decreases and the material’s characteristics change.

TypeApprox. goldFineness
22 karat91.6%–91.7%916
21 karat87.5%875
18 karat75%750

22K: higher purity and a rich yellow colour

Because 22K jewellery contains more gold, it generally has a richer yellow appearance and a higher value at the same weight. Its relative softness means alloy quality and construction matter for fine stone settings or demanding everyday designs. It is popular for many traditional jewellery styles in Bangladesh.

21K: a middle ground

Twenty-one karat contains slightly more alloy metal than 22K. It retains high purity and colour while offering a different practical balance for some designs. The fineness mark 875 represents 21K. Final durability does not depend on karat alone; thickness, design, solder, and alloy composition also matter.

18K: more alloy and broader design options

Eighteen karat is 75% gold, with the remaining portion made from alloy metals. It can generally be harder and more scratch-resistant than 22K, making it common in complex designs, stone settings, and white or rose gold jewellery. Harder does not mean damage-proof, so care is still important.

Which one may suit you?

  • Purity and traditional yellow colour: consider 22K.
  • High purity with a different practical balance: consider 21K.
  • Stone settings, modern designs, or relative durability: 18K may be suitable.

These are general considerations. Allergies, alloy metals, workmanship, daily use, and budget can change the right choice for an individual buyer.

Is traditional gold another karat?

“Traditional” appears as a separate market category in Bangladesh price lists. It should not be assumed to equal 22K, 21K, or 18K without testing. Check the purity test, hallmark, and specifications written on the invoice.

Marks to check when buying jewellery

A hallmark or fineness mark provides important purity information. For example, 916 commonly represents 22K, 875 represents 21K, and 750 represents 18K. Do not rely on a stamp alone; a reputable seller, testing evidence, and a detailed invoice also matter.
