স্বর্ণের দাম বেশি হওয়ায় কম ক্যারেটের গহনাকে বেশি ক্যারেট বলা, plating-কে solid gold হিসেবে দেখানো, বা net gold weight-এর সঙ্গে পাথরের ওজন মেশানো—ছোট ভুলও বড় আর্থিক ক্ষতি করতে পারে। কোনো একটি পরীক্ষা সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয় না; hallmark, invoice এবং উপযুক্ত purity test একসঙ্গে ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

ক্যারেট ও বিশুদ্ধতার হিসাব

ক্যারেট সংখ্যাকে ২৪ দিয়ে ভাগ করে ১০০ দিয়ে গুণ করলে আনুমানিক খাঁটি স্বর্ণের শতাংশ পাওয়া যায়। যেমন ২২ ÷ ২৪ × ১০০ = প্রায় ৯১.৭ শতাংশ। খাঁটি ২৪ ক্যারেট স্বর্ণ নরম হওয়ায় গহনা তৈরিতে তামা, রুপা বা অন্য metal মেশানো হয়।

বাংলাদেশে ১ ভরি = ১১.৬৬৪ গ্রাম ধরা হয়। দর তুলনা করার সময় সব value একই unit-এ রূপান্তর করুন।

ঘরে বসে প্রাথমিক পরীক্ষা

ঘরোয়া পরীক্ষা বড় ধরনের নকল বা plating নিয়ে সন্দেহ তৈরি করতে পারে, কিন্তু নির্ভুল ক্যারেট বলে না। বিশেষ করে ২১ ও ২২ ক্যারেটের সূক্ষ্ম পার্থক্য ঘরে নিশ্চিত করা প্রায় অসম্ভব।

• চুম্বক: স্বর্ণ শক্তিশালী চুম্বকে আটকায় না। আটকালেই সন্দেহ, কিন্তু না আটকানো স্বর্ণ হওয়ার প্রমাণ নয়—তামা ও পিতলও সাধারণত আটকায় না।
• আতশ কাঁচ: কিনারা, clasp, খাঁজ এবং ঘষা জায়গায় ভিন্ন রঙের metal বেরিয়েছে কি না দেখুন।
• Stamp: 916, 875, 750 বা 22K, 21K, 18K খুঁজুন; জাল stamp সম্ভব বলে এটিকে একমাত্র প্রমাণ ধরবেন না।
• ঘনত্ব: বাতাসে ও পানিতে ওজনের সাহায্যে আনুমানিক density পাওয়া যায়, কিন্তু accurate scale দরকার এবং ফাঁপা বা পাথর বসানো গহনায় ফল ভুল হতে পারে।
• Unglazed ceramic: হালকা streak test কিছু সন্দেহ ধরতে পারে, কিন্তু গহনায় আঁচড় পড়তে পারে—মূল্যবান গহনায় এটি সুপারিশ করা যায় না।

যেসব পদ্ধতি এড়িয়ে চলবেন

• দাঁতে কামড়: সীসা বা টিনও নরম; এতে প্রমাণ হয় না এবং দাঁত বা গহনা ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হতে পারে।
• ঘরে acid: nitric acid বা aqua regia বিপজ্জনক; এটি প্রশিক্ষিত পেশাদারের কাজ।
• শব্দ বা রং: উন্নত plating এবং খাঁটি স্বর্ণ দেখতে কাছাকাছি হতে পারে।
• ভিনেগার বা লেবু: ফল অনির্ভরযোগ্য এবং surface ক্ষতির ঝুঁকি আছে।

পেশাদার পরীক্ষা: কোনটি কী বলে?

XRF দ্রুত এবং non-destructive, কিন্তু সাধারণত surface মাপে; পুরু plating ফলকে প্রভাবিত করতে পারে। বড় অঙ্কের বিরোধ বা খুব নির্ভুল ফল দরকার হলে qualified laboratory-এর fire assay report বেশি উপযোগী হতে পারে। পরীক্ষা করানোর আগে lab-এর স্বীকৃতি, পদ্ধতি এবং লিখিত report দেবে কি না জেনে নিন।

হলমার্ক চেনার ছয় ধাপ

1. লুপ ব্যবহার করুন: mark সাধারণত ভেতরের দিক, clasp বা ring shank-এর পাশে থাকে।
2. মান পড়ুন: 916 মানে ২২K, 875 মানে ২১K এবং 750 মানে ১৮K-এর দাবি।
3. প্রতিষ্ঠানের পরিচয় খুঁজুন: jeweller-এর নাম, initial বা testing identifier আছে কি না দেখুন।
4. খোদাইয়ের মান দেখুন: laser mark সাধারণত পরিষ্কার, সমান এবং অগভীর হয়; অস্পষ্ট বা বিকৃত mark নিয়ে প্রশ্ন করুন।
5. Cash memo মিলান: গায়ের mark ও invoice-এর karat এক হতে হবে।
6. দোকানের সনদ দেখুন: BAJUS membership বা প্রাসঙ্গিক certificate হালনাগাদ কি না যাচাই করুন।

Hallmark থাকলেই সব ঝুঁকি শেষ হয় না। stamp নকল হতে পারে, দোকান নিয়ম না-ও মানতে পারে, এবং hallmark পাথরের দাম বা ওজনের সঠিকতা নিশ্চিত করে না। বড় কেনাকাটায় independent XRF একটি বাড়তি সুরক্ষা।

কেনার সময় চেকলিস্ট

• সর্বশেষ প্রকাশিত দর দেখে ক্যারেট অনুযায়ী মিলিয়ে নিন।
• নিজের সামনে calibrated digital scale-এ ওজন করান।
• পাথর বা মুক্তার ওজন net gold weight থেকে আলাদা লেখান।
• Invoice-এ ওজন, ক্যারেট, rate, making charge, VAT এবং অন্যান্য charge আলাদা আছে কি না দেখুন।
• Exchange ও buy-back deduction আগে লিখিতভাবে নিন।
• সম্ভব হলে traceable payment method ব্যবহার করুন।

সন্দেহ বা প্রতারণা হলে

প্রথমে দোকানকে লিখিতভাবে অভিযোগ দিন এবং invoice, payment proof, ছবি ও test report সংরক্ষণ করুন। সমাধান না হলে BAJUS এবং জাতীয় ভোক্তা-অধিকার সংরক্ষণ অধিদপ্তরের হালনাগাদ অভিযোগপদ্ধতি অনুসরণ করুন।

No single home test can prove that jewellery is genuine or determine its exact karat. Safe screening can identify obvious warning signs, but a major purchase should combine hallmark inspection, a complete invoice, and suitable professional testing.

Karat and purity

Divide karat by 24 and multiply by 100 to estimate gold content. For example, 22 ÷ 24 × 100 is approximately 91.7%. Pure 24K gold is soft, so jewellery normally contains alloy metals.

Safe preliminary checks

• Magnet: attraction is suspicious, but no attraction does not prove gold.
• Magnifier: inspect edges, clasps, grooves, and worn areas for another metal showing through.
• Stamp: look for 916, 875, 750, 22K, 21K, or 18K, while remembering stamps can be forged.
• Density: this requires an accurate scale and is unreliable for hollow or stone-set pieces.

Methods to avoid

Do not bite jewellery, use strong acids at home, or rely on sound, colour, vinegar, or lemon. These methods are unreliable and may harm the jewellery, the user, or both.

Professional tests

XRF is fast and non-destructive but primarily reads the surface, so thick plating may mislead it. For a dispute or high-value transaction, ask a qualified laboratory which method is appropriate and request a written report.

Six steps for reading a hallmark

1. Use a loupe to inspect the inside, clasp, or ring shank.
2. Read the purity number: 916 for 22K, 875 for 21K, or 750 for 18K.
3. Look for the jeweller’s or testing body’s identifier.
4. Question blurred, uneven, or distorted engraving.
5. Match the mark to the karat written on the invoice.
6. Check the seller’s current membership or relevant certificate.

Buyer safeguards

• Watch the item being weighed on a calibrated digital scale.
• Separate stones and pearls from net gold weight.
• Itemise weight, karat, rate, making charge, VAT, and other charges.
• Get exchange and buy-back deductions in writing.
• Keep the invoice, payment evidence, photos, and test report.
